WITH OUR HEARTS like drifting suns, had we but walked,
\nAs often before, the April fields till star-light
\nSilkened over with viewless gauze the darkness
\nUnder the cliff, our trysting place in the wood,
\nWhere the brook turns! Had we but passed from wooing
\nLike notes of music that run together, into winning,
\nIn the inspired improvisation of love!
\nBut to put back of us as a canticle ended
\nThe rapt enchantment of the flesh,
\nIn which our souls swooned, down, down,
\nWhere time was not, nor space, nor ourselves\u2014
\nAnnihilated in love!
\nTo leave these behind for a room with lamps:
\nAnd to stand with our Secret mocking itself,
\nAnd hiding itself amid flowers and mandolins,
\nStared at by all between salad and coffee.
\nAnd to see him tremble, and feel myself
\nPrescient, as one who signs a bond\u2014
\nNot flaming with gifts and pledges heaped
\nWith rosy hands over his brow.
\nAnd then, O night! deliberate! unlovely!
\nWith all of our wooing blotted out by the winning,
\nIn a chosen room in an hour that was known to all!
\nNext day he sat so listless, almost cold,
\nSo strangely changed, wondering why I wept,
\nTill a kind of sick despair and voluptuous madness
\nSeized us to make the pact of death.
\nA stalk of the earth-sphere,
\nFrail as star-light;
\nWaiting to be drawn once again
\nInto creation’s stream.
\nBut next time to be given birth
\nGazed at by Raphael and St. Francis
\nSometimes as they pass.
\nFor I am their little brother,
\nTo be known clearly face to face
\nThrough a cycle of birth hereafter run.
\nYou may know the seed and the soil;
\nYou may feel the cold rain fall,
\nBut only the earth-sphere, only heaven
\nKnows the secret of the seed
\nIn the nuptial chamber under the soil.
\nThrow me into the stream again,
\nGive me another trial\u2014
