A journey into Mario Giacomelli’s darkroom, the heart of his inexhaustible creative process, to explore it in every detail. A fresh and in-depth reading of the poetics of a great master of photography.<\/p>\n

Certain dark rooms can become an inexhaustible source of light. Mario Giacomelli’s darkroom (1925-2000), for example, was for decades a magical place, a beacon that inspired novice artists and a creative forge that welcomed great masters of contemporary art.<\/p>\n

Born in Senigallia into humble circumstances, Giacomelli discovered photography in his late twenties and immediately stood out for his unconventional approach: tired of the Neorealist heritage, Giacomelli no longer used the lens to document reality, but to find the magic that reality itself conceals. His shots quickly traveled the world (exhibitions in Paris, Barcelona, and New York)\u2014landscapes that look like abstract paintings, seminarists playing tag as if they were a flock of little birds… concreteness gives way to a dream, and simple “sight” becomes vision.<\/p>\n

In this book, photographer Guido Harari and his niece Katiuscia Biondi Giacomelli enter Mario Giacomelli’s darkroom\u2014the “shaman’s den,” the heart of his inexhaustible creative process\u2014to investigate it in every detail: annotated contact sheets, progressive prints, poems, manuscripts, working tools, and largely unseen wonders that offer a fresh and in-depth reading of the poetics of a great master of photography.<\/p>\n
