The volume is the result of original research into the relationship between the photography of Mario Giacomelli, one of the most important photographers of the twentieth century, and Alberto Burri. Through the discovery of previously unpublished works and documents from the archives of the Fondazione Palazzo Albizzini Collezione Burri, the Mario Giacomelli Archive, and the Sarteanesi Archive, it has been possible to reconstruct not only the story of their encounters and friendship, but also a stylistic and ethical affinity that can be traced in their respective works.

The theme of the landscape and several specific series by Mario Giacomelli—such as Presa di coscienza sulla natura, Storie di Terra, and Motivo suggerito dal taglio dell’albero—find formal affinities in some of Burri’s Sacchi, Combustioni, Cretti, and Cellotex works. In both artists, reality is reworked in a way that appears conventionally abstract, yet remains deeply connected to the human being and the human condition.

The book accompanies the exhibitions at MAXXI in Rome, the Fondazione Palazzo Albizzini Collezione Burri in Città di Castello, and Palazzo del Duca in Senigallia (2021).
