Mario Giacomelli is recognized as one of the masters of 20th-century visual culture. His photography is rooted in the Marche region yet transcends its borders to become a universal language. Documentation and transfiguration intertwine: reality becomes the matter of metamorphosis, and black and white a field of intensity rather than narrative. Between realism and “informal” art, Giacomelli experiments with superimpositions, cropping, and montages to transform the image into a revelation, while his personal archive opens up as a poetic reservoir.

Published in the Electaphoto series, the volume is edited by Bartolomeo Pietromarchi and Katiuscia Biondi Giacomelli. It accompanies the exhibition “Mario Giacomelli. Oltre il visibile” (Aosta, Centro Saint-Bénin, March 21 – September 13, 2026), but goes beyond the scope of a traditional catalog, taking the form of a richly illustrated monograph. Through a wide selection of images and page layouts, it offers a fresh critical approach to the work of the photographer from Senigallia: the result is a body of work that is both grounded and boundless, capable of speaking to the present with enduring strength.
