My Marche

Images

Just like the hills surrounding Senigallia (the landscape Giacomelli photographed throughout his life), the sea shore is a setting to which Giacomelli frequently returned. It is here that Giacomelli made the series La domenica prima (The Sunday before) (2000), Il mare dei miei racconti (The sea of my memories) (1983/87), Al molo (At the quay) (1980s/90s), Le mie Marche (My Marche)(1970s/90s), Il mare (The sea) (1960s/90s), Bambini al mare (Children by the sea) (Colonie, 1960s), as well as his first photograph, L’approdo (Landing place), which was taken on the beach in Senigallia. Across this lapse of time, the stretch of sand that runs along the Adriatic Coast from Ancona to Fano, via Montemarciano Marina, Senigallia, and Marotta, remains a constant. Giacomelli fixed his gaze on the sea, whether looking from the shore or from the air in a Piper plane, like for his landscapes.

This series was photographed at Montemarciano Marina, south of Senigallia. Its subject is the dynamic metamorphosis of matter. Giacomelli’s use of high contrast and superimposition foregrounds his gestuality in the moment of photographing.
