Mario Giacomelli (Senigallia, 1925–2000) was one of the leading Italian photographers of the twentieth century. A printer by profession, he had been painting and writing poetry since he was young, and only in 1953 did he acquire his first camera. In 1969, at a solo exhibition at the Galleria Il Diaframma in Milan, Giacomelli exhibited around fifteen paintings alongside his photographs. This detail provided the starting point for the research project presented here, with the aim of rediscovering the great photographer’s painting practice and retracing the extensive network of relationships he cultivated within Senigallia’s cultural and artistic circles.
Giacomelli’s drawings, paintings, and collages are thus repositioned alongside his photography, adding another dimension to his complex personality and allowing for a more comprehensive understanding of his work. As Giacomelli himself put it: “Here, then, are some of my works that others call painting rather than ‘LIFE’.”
