In 2001, Giacomelli’s children, Rita and Simone, made an inventory of Giacomelli’s entire oeuvre, according to their father’s instructions. In 2000, Giacomelli created a definitive order for each of his photographic series, with the archival assistance of Simone Guerra.

The Mario Giacomelli Archive was founded in 2003. From 2007, it has been managed solely by Giacomelli’s family. The Archive conserves the entirety of Giacomelli’s photographic oeuvre (including negatives and test prints) created by the artist between 1954 and 2000. The series have been conserved intact, following Giacomelli’s organisation.

The Archive also conserves the documents which contextualise Giacomelli’s work. These were first inventoried by Antonella Russo, and subsequently by Marco Andreani and Katiuscia Biondi Giacomelli. The documents include Giacomelli’s correspondence from the 1950s to 2000, postcards, writings on photography, his poems, catalogues, exhibition invitations and brochures, press cuttings, photographs and family mementos, and books and journals on art and photography.

The Archive also conserves the entirety of Giacomelli’s oeuvre of paintings (1960s-80s). These are in the process of being archived and catalogued, and as yet remain unpublished.
