In the series Territorio del linguaggio (Territory of language), Giacomelli photographs the offcuts from the process of making marble. Giacomelli immortalises the detritus of this noble material by transforming it into an immense imaginary landscape. These photographs rewrite geography without compass or reference points. Giacomelli opens up infinite, indeterminate spaces (perhaps even more clearly than in L’infinito), beginning with the material, which, being waste, is itself caught in between presence and absence. He envisions that which belongs to a world of invisibility. He allows himself to be transported along journeys through his interiority, and his photography simply retraces this movement. What we see is the territory of language.
